“we forget the last person all these interventions just become a PR stunt…”

– Praneet Simha.

I was talking to a senior bureaucrat of the Chhattisgarh government about their new online education initiative ‘ education at your doorstep’. I was trying to raise the issues Bastar region where major populations do not have access to the internet either because of a lack of devices or the internet. .So basically only a small fraction of students are getting benefits from this intervention.

I was also highlighting the issues of quality of content, children’s concentration capacity to focus on the screen, specific skills that teachers have to acquire to lead a class online, and also the diverse backgrounds children are coming from especially from the context of tribal children.

the officer while agreeing to every issue I was pointing out has said something is better than nothing. This sentence got stuck in my mind. If government starts thinking in this direction I feel that creates more inequality. we are forgetting the whole concept of inclusivity. If we are starting with the notion of something is better than nothing by default we are ignoring about the last person. Whereas our intervention should be framed to reach out to the last person.

I feel if we forget the last person all these interventions just become a PR stunt and number game.
